Live tracking & GPS communications available anytime an AWE team is on the mountain
Take a look at the map below to follow along on the mountain real-time via Garmin inReach Messenger. GPS breadcrumbs will be available to give you an idea of where the team is hanging out. Once a summit bid or is under way you can expect more frequent updates and follow the attempt in near real-time.
How to best use our AWE team GPS tracking and communication features:
We recommend using THIS LINK to open a separate and larger window to optimize your viewing.
- Track Selection: We will sometimes have multiple teams out at once. You will need to choose the correct team you are trying to track. Hint: Under the team names it will indicate when they were “last seen” which can let you know which team is active.
- Turn on the desired track: Click the plus sign (+) next to the track you’d like to follow. This will allow for you to see the full track.
- Message and interact with the team: Look for the arrow icon to indicate the current location of the group. Click on the ‘message’ button (upper left next to the map below) and type away. Just like a regular text message, no special charges apply on either end – thanks to an unlimited message subscription through Garmin.
- Stay Informed: Enjoy live updates on the group’s location and progress as they embark on their journey, accessible through the map interface and our social media platforms.
By following these steps, you can easily keep tabs on your tour group during their backpacking adventure.
Notes about GPS communication: be aware that downloading new messages or sending location updates requires the inReach GPS to be powered and have a clear view of the sky, so don’t worry if there are gaps in communication or if you don’t see movement on the map. The GPS will often be powered off while at camp to preserve batteries.
It’s always fun to see a new inbound messages in the morning – don’t let the time lag between sending and receiving messages stop you from writing!
