About AWExpeditions’ Mountaineering School on Komo Kulshan

This intensive glacier school combines expert instruction with a summit climb via the stunning Easton Glacier or equally beautiful yet lesser known Squak Glacier route, making it an unforgettable adventure. After meeting your all-women team and female guide(s) in Burlington, WA, you’ll journey into the heart of the Cascades for a multi-day expedition that balances immersive training, hands-on practice, and the thrill of ascending one of the Pacific Northwest’s iconic peaks. Our mountaineering school includes four days on the mountain, allowing time for in-depth skills training as well as the flexibility to match summit day timing to weather and snow conditions.

Led by experienced female guides, the program immerses you in the fundamentals of glacier mountaineering within a supportive, small-group setting that fosters camaraderie amid an environment focused on building new skills and mastering shared challenges.

From reviewing and optimizing how to pack and carry heavy loads in the backcountry, roping up for glacier travel, and practicing self-arrest on icy slopes, to savoring the reward of a hearty camp-cooked meal after a full day of effort, our mountaineering school itinerary is thoughtfully designed to build your confidence, refine your skills, and deepen your connection to the mountain.

Highlights of the Experience:

  • Hands-On Training: Master glacier travel, ice axe use, crampon techniques, and self-arrest skills under the guidance of seasoned mountaineering professionals during four days on the mountain.
  • A Summit Bid to Remember: Push for the summit of Komo Kulshan, experiencing the exhilaration of standing atop one of the region’s most iconic peaks.
  • All-Inclusive Mountain Logistics: From group gear, the coordination of rental gear, and permit management to expert instruction, we’ve got you covered so you can focus on what you are there for: the climb, camaraderie, and learning new skills.
  • Intimate Group Size: A 3:1 climber-to-guide ratio ensures personalized attention, fostering both learning and camaraderie.
  • Seamless start and finish in Burlington, WA, with team transfer options from Seattle: Meet your team in Burlington, where all the details—from pre- and post-climb meals, to local gear rental facilitation and the option to book a hassle-free team lodging & trailhead transfer add-on —are handled for a stress-free adventure. A transfer option from Seattle airport is available, eliminating the need to book a rental car if you are traveling from out of state.

Is this adventure right for you?

If you are a woman who is enamored with developing mountaineering skills, and you have a high level of general fitness, the answer is yes. No prior mountaineering experience is required, but each team member must be in very good physical condition. On the approach to basecamp you’ll be carrying a ~45 pound pack over rugged terrain. Skills practice and summit days comes with much lighter packs (10 – 15 pounds) but big elevation gain on snow and ice. Distances on Mount Baker / Komo Kulshan aren’t terribly long – about 4 miles from the trailhead to basecamp, and 3 miles from basecamp to the summit – but that doesn’t mean this itinerary is easy: we’ll be covering some steep terrain, and mountaineering is magnitudes more physically demanding (and much slower) than hiking on a trail.

Previous hiking experience is required for this Mount Baker mountaineering school; prior camping and backpacking experience is highly recommended.

Our AWExpeditions Komo Kulshan / Mount Baker Mountaineering School is perfect for:

  • Aspiring female mountaineers eager to gain foundational skills
  • Women preparing for future expeditions on glaciated peaks
  • Outdoor enthusiasts seeking an immersive alpine adventure amongst like-minded women

The Best Time to Climb Komo Kulshan

Climbing season on Kulshan typically runs from late May or early June through the middle to end of August. Each month comes with its own pros and cons.

  • June: While early-season climbs can be beautiful, June often brings colder temperatures and lingering heavy snowpack. This can make the approach to camp more challenging, with deep, wet snow requiring extra effort and adding to overall fatigue. Weather patterns are also less predictable, increasing the chance of storms or whiteout conditions.
  • July: July often strikes the perfect balance on the conditions front, but can be a busy time on the mountain – particularly on the weekends (which is why we like to scheduled our climbs for mid-week). By July, the snowpack has usually stabilized, allowing for safer and smoother glacier travel. The weather is generally more consistent, with sunny days and pleasant climbing conditions, and the risk of rockfall is much lower than in August.
  • August: By late summer, the warmth of August starts to take its toll on the mountain. Rising temperatures lead to increased rockfall hazard, melting snowbridges, and widening crevasses, all of which make glacier travel more tenuous. The heat can also make summit days more grueling, and the loss of snow cover often means longer stretches of loose rock on the approach.

  • How technically difficult is Mount Baker? Mount Baker via the Easton Glacier or Squak Glacier Route is a moderate glacier climb that entails moderately steep terrain and crevasse crossings; depending on the season, some sections can require exposed climbing moves. Summit day typically involves ~5-7 hours of continuous effort, and can be longer if snow conditions are difficult or the schedule necessitates that we attempt the summit and return to town on the same day.
  • How much weight will I have to carry? On the way to basecamp you will need to carry all of your personal & climbing gear, as well as an allotment of group gear; expect a pack weight of 40 - 50 lbs. For summit day you'll only be carrying layers, snacks and water -- typically no more than 10 -15 lbs.
  • What types of conditions should I expect on Mount Baker? June through September typically show low precipitation on Mount Baker.  That said, the North Cascades are known for precarious weather and fast-moving storms. Always be prepared for wet weather, and temperatures that can range anywhere from the eighties as low as sub-freezing.  Your gear should be dialed for 20 degree temperatures.
